Bark Shaving

What's Ready? (updated 2/22/21)

I am all a twitter here.  It's almost time to gather bark!

The best time to gather bark is before the trees/shrubs leaf out or sap starts running, as this is when the energy of the plant is strongest in its bark. This is especially important for oak trees to also avoid spreading oak wilt disease.

There is plenty of prickly ash bark available at the site of the you-pick garden.  I can likely find a different location local to Northfield for white oak and red osier dogwood, too.  Let me know of other barks you might be interested in gathering, also.  Those are the three I use the most, but I can perhaps find what others need, too.  Perhaps.

Our first time for bark gathering will be Sunday, February 28 at 3:30.  The weather looks much warmer.    Dress ready to tromp through snow!  Please let me know if you plan on coming and I'll give you details of where to meet.

I am happy to meet at other times, too.  Just let me know a few days and times that work for you and I'm sure we can work something out.  Note:  we won't be gathering white oak bark past March 15.

Transplants to be available Spring 2021.  Click here for more information.
