This mullein chai is a tasty, mild chai beverage that is also very healthy for you!
Mullein is a safe and effective respiratory remedy that helps open the lungs, eases spasms, tightness, and cough, and soothes irritation and dryness.
1 ounce (2-3 cups) dried mullein leaves (great for lung support)
2 anise star pods
¼ teaspoon cardamom seeds
2 cinnamon sticks
2 tablespoons fennel seeds, whole
1 pinch nutmeg powder
3-6 slices of ginger, based on your preference
1 quart milk of choice
3 tablespoons honey or 6 tablespoons maple syrup
Bring one quart of water to a boil.
Either add dried mullein to the pot of water and cover for four or more hours OR put mullein leaves in a jar, fill jar with just boiled water, put lid on, and let steep for 4 or more hours.
Strain mullein infusion, composting the mullein leaves. If mullein hairs or particulate are present, strain again using a coffee filter or cotton cloth in your strainer.
The infusion should be dark in color and free of plant particulate.
Gently heat the infusion, adding all the spices.
Let simmer gently, covered, for 20 minutes or more.
Strain and discard spices (or steep t spices again with plain hot water for another tasty tea).
Combine the spiced mullein infusion with the milk and gently heat to serving temperature.
Add sweetener to taste.
Tip: Next time, experiment with the flavor by adding a few more spices — perhaps turmeric, black pepper, or cloves. Have fun with it!
